We thought the barbaric shooting of Brumbies - including babies was finally a thing of the past. But here we go again, June 2025 and Penny Sharpe and the Government of New South Wales are at it again.

ABOUT REGIONAL 30 May 2025 | Edwina Mason reports:

The NSW Government will resume aerial shooting of wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park in June, sparking renewed controversy and criticism just months after NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe appeared to suggest the controversial control method was being phased out.

The decision follows the release of updated population figures by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) last week, which estimated that between 1579 and 5639 horses remain in the park – a significant drop from the 2023 estimated average of 17,393.

So how many Brumbies are there?

Are there 1579 or 5639?

Would this so called 'count' fly anywhere else?

This level of uncertainty would not be tolerated in any scientific field.

Imagine researchers in any discipline getting away with such a crazy range in their findings!

They’d be ridiculed and laughed out of the lab.

In 2024 we asked - and here we are in 2025 asking once again...

With such a shoddy population count before the cull even begins, how can the government possibly know when to stop and ensure the mandated 3,000 Brumbies survive?

Are they just aiming for eradication disguised as management?

AND this time by their own admission there may be FAR fewer than 3,000 horses - again, they state there are 1579 to 5639 horses.

ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY MP EMMA HURST WRITES:

“The aerial shooting of brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park occurred [in 2024] because of false data - data that the community and independent experts told the Government was unreliable and incorrect.

This is a situation where actions taken by the Government without proper evidence and processes went horribly wrong. The killing of these horses was entirely unnecessary.”
