WE ASK IS: "IT'S BEEN DONE FOR YEARS" A FAIR JUSTIFICATION?
Premier Chris Minns has offered several explanations in defence of the aerial shooting of Brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park.
The first was this...
"Well, look, I don't feel great about it, but I also think it's important to note that we've been shooting Brumbies in the national park for years."
How long something has been happening isn't evidence that it's right. Is it?
If that were true, we'd never improve our laws, abandon outdated practices or adopt more humane alternatives.
"We've always done it this way" has never been a convincing justification for continuing a practice.
IF SHOOTING HORSES AT CLOSE RANGE ISN'T HUMANE --
HOW IS SHOOTING THEM FROM A HELICOPTER HUMANE?
Minns then explained how he believed the previous method wasn't humane:
But the old way of doing it was that we would bait them into a pen. And I saw the pen. Try and get 20 in there. Then the gates would automatically close in on the 20.
And then more often than not, national parks people would shoot them at close range.
And I mean, I think that's hardly humane or a hardly humane way of managing the population."
PREMIER MINNS MAKES NO SENSE
So, according to Premier Minns, shooting horses at close range after they have been contained isn't humane.
Yet somehow, Minns believes chasing frightened horses with helicopters and shooting them from the air is.
That is a contradiction many Australians are struggling to understand.

A wild horse has the same capacity to feel pain and fear as any native or domestic animal.
Brumbies are being chased by helicopters, shot from the air and on the ground, despite the existence of humane, non-lethal alternatives.
We can protect native species with humane methods -- without resorting to barbaric practices that cause unnecessary suffering.
